Just in time for Cyber Monday, which had sales exceeding $1B last year, Google has released its Google Catalogs app for Android, though it has offered the app for iPad since August.
"With rich product images, videos, and the ability to curate your own personal collages to share with friends, Google Catalogs makes browsing your favorite mail order catalogs easy, fun and interactive," Google Business Product Manager Abigail Holtz writes on the Google blog.
The app features 400+ digital catalogs from 125+ brands including Nordstrom, Williams-Sonoma, Nike, Urban Outfitters, Bloomingdales, Patagonia, Ugg and Sephora. Shoppers can browse categories like apparel, jewelry, toys and gadgets.
Google Catalogs features interactive tags for pricing, ordering details, a collage feature to let consumers clip favorites and will direct shoppers to the nearest store or redirect them to the company's website for purchasing.
As Read Write Web reports, Google Catalogs represents an inflection point for mobile shoppers and a merge between the tech industry and Madison Avenue retailers.
"One potential problem for retailers is that they do not get the data they would otherwise accumulate on buyers by having their home addresses on hand for future catalogs and demographic breakdown," Dan Rowinski writes. "If users do make a purchase by being redirected through Google Catalogs, retailers will eventually get that information but users can hide behind their Google Account (or not sign in at all) for browsing purposes."
Google also released some holiday tips for stress-free shopping, such as letting Google Product Search do the research for you, using Google Shopper as an assistant in-store and using Google Wallet.
As the Los Angeles Times reported yesterday, Cyber Monday is expected to hit an all-time record of online shopping sales. comScore recently reported that Americans spent $816M, a 26% increase from last year, in online holiday shopping on Black Friday this year.
“With brick-and-mortar retail also reporting strong gains on Black Friday, it’s clear that the heavy promotional activity had a positive impact on both channels," comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni said in a press release. "We now turn our attention to Cyber Monday, a day that Shop.org says will see eight-in-ten retailers running special online promotions. Last year, Cyber Monday was the heaviest day of online spending ever, with sales exceeding $1 Billion, and we fully expect to see another record set this year.”
Other shopping apps include Toys R Us, Target for iPad, Amazon Windowshop, Zappos Mobile and Gilt for iPad.
